Be Active - A Winter Walk

Tracery of branches

If you are taking this walk around February, you may see some catkins, such as Hazel catkins. The catkin tassels dangle from branches and look decorative. They are the means by which the plant releases pollen to the wind.

The deciduous trees will have no leaves at all; this will make it easier to notice the overall shape of the tree. Take a look around to see some of the very different shapes formed by the traceries of branches against the sky. You’ll spot tall thin shapes, conical and lollipop shapes, low spreading shapes and many more. You’ll also see that some trees grow with thick and twisted branches, some however look rather more delicate.
