Challenge Yourself - Exploring Words - Collage

"The 'Paper Crafted Daisy' was a great idea I could use to develop existing skills. I was able to create different variations of the daisy. I felt confident and proud of what Id made. Im going to send one to a friend whos ill to cheer her up."

Step 3: Working with a theme

Try the exercise again, this time working with a theme. Now that you’ve had an initial practice, and you’ve got an idea of how you want your collage to look, you can concentrate on choosing words and phrases that explore your mood or theme

Some ideas for themes:

  • A favourite hobby, for example, gardening
  • Summer
  • Memories
  • Family
  • Friendship
  • Holidays
  • A person that means a lot to you. You could think about their qualities or interests, find words that describe those, and incorporate them into your design

  • Depending on your theme, you may need to find a special interest magazine. For example, if you’re chosen theme is gardening, a gardening magazine will offer you lots more words and phrases than a general interest magazine
  • Add recycled materials to your word collage to add colour and texture; if using thick materials use PVA as it is stronger than a glue stick
  • Try mounting your finished piece onto coloured card
