Welcome to our February news

11th February 2016

We can’t believe it’s February already, though we do feel like we’ve been through a few seasons already with the changeable weather. We’ve spotted early snowdrops and crocus, and a bit of blue sky too.

Manchester Metropolitan University adds some creative calm to their day…

Over the years we’ve delivered stand-alone creative wellbeing workshops to staff and students at Manchester Metropolitan University. The question on everyone’s lips afterwards has always been ‘When’s the next one?’ so we’re delighted to be offering a 6-week programme of lunchtime workshops to staff at Manchester Metropolitan University. Here people have the opportunity to take some time in their lunch hour to get creative and learn self-soothe strategies and ways to boost productivity, improve decision-making and flexible thinking, and improve confidence and mood.

So what have some of the participants said?

“I came as I’d like the chance to be creative and have a calm hour in the working day. I have enjoyed space to do this and connect with myself. I feel more centred and focused for carrying on with my work.”

“I’d like to be more productive, less anxious and more confident. I enjoyed making something linked to the things that make me feel calm. I have learnt a new strategy.”

If you’d like some calm in your working day why not get in touch and find out what we can do with you. Workshops are tailored especially to your desires and needs.

Boost your resilience to stress through creativity

It’s all happening in Manchester. Bringing together mindfulness, art and creativity Manchester Art Gallery are hosting an exciting new course for adults. Combining theory and practice and using evidence based techniques this course is based upon the principles of Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy programmes. Suitable for beginners and more experienced practitioners.

Mindfulness theory and practice is introduced as a toolkit, a way to explore and notice physical and mental wellbeing. The arts and creative activities provide a chance to practice mindfulness in an innovative and accessible way. The gallery’s rich exhibitions and collections are used to illustrate the mindfulness concept further. Run by two creative wellbeing specialists Cathy Fortune and Wendy Teall.

Add some creative spice in your life…

Why not try one of our creative wellbeing suggestions for February for yourself. Our suggestions are perfect for time-out on your own or enjoyable activities to do with others.

Rainy days

We don’t know about you but there are plenty of rainy days here so we’re glad to have a range of wonderful activities to choose from to accompany a cup of tea and the warmth. Create artwork for the home, or as gifts for others. This Stitch a Bird activity is great for Mother’s Day coming up early March in the UK. Not that you need an excuse to send a card. It’s well known that giving benefits the giver as much as the recipient!

Out and about
Almost all places have a gallery. When was the last time you went to one? Print off our creative wellbeing exercises to take with you on a gallery visit. The activity encourages you to look at artwork in different ways and find out more about yourself and your opinions, and can be a great way to lift your spirits.

Be Active
Looking and noticing can be two different things. It’s easy to look without seeing. This 'Winter Walk' activity helps you to notice more than you might do normally. Apart from looking, the 'Winter Walk' will also engage with your senses of touch, smell and hearing to enhance your enjoyment. Try our winter walk here.
