excellent resource
Start2 is an invaluable resource. It helped me immensely to feel a lot more positive, and feel that setting goals isn't a waste of time, and that they are even achievable. The way the activities are structured, breaking them down into easily doable steps helps you feel capable of tackling life's problems by approaching them the same way and breaking down things which seemed too huge to tackle previously. It's not just helpful, it's really enjoyable too, most people are creative, but just lack the ideas or push to get stuck in.

online gallery
I came across a painting by John Brett whilst looking at the Start2 Gallery online and I love his paintings. I'd never heard of him before but have now been looking at other works of his online in Wikipedia, BBC and the Tate. They are beautiful and really inspiring.
Has also sparked my desire to trace my great great grandfather's family as he too was a Brett and both my grandmother and mother were very artistic.
Thank you Start 2

I find the activities such asan you bottle happiness and making a flower and writing good things on the petals, very helpful, they help me focus on the nice things and that it's not all dark and scary.

Start2
I found Start2 just before the new year and had been feeling depressed and demotivated for months. I started using Start2 and felt better within a few days - more motivated and happier. I set goals for the new year which I succeeded in completing, used the mindfulness tools, have sent postcards and animations to friends and family and tracking my mood I find it has continued to improve. I particularly enjoyed doing creative writing activities and used the same format to do a piece using a local museum - it has been amazing and long may it continue. Have you thought of lottery funding?

We're very pleased to hear how Start2 has been benefiting you, and all the activities you've been using and sharing. As an NHS funded service - through Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust - we're often not able to gain certain pots of funding, often for charities/third sector. We do however work with partner organisations in order to work within the community, which on occasion has been funded by other bodies. Thank you very much for your feedback. I came along to see my counsellor as I had lost my motivation and have been feeling depressed. She passed me the Start2 details as I said I really enjoy being creative and I study Media. Start2 is really easy to use, it has lots of choice and I feel better knowing I am doing something for myself. It has helped me to get back into creating things, seeing things differently and given me some new ideas and I dont feel quite as stuck in a rut as I did.

My counsellor gave me a postcard for the Start2 service. I thought it would help my sister as she has been depressed. We looked at it together and I found lots of activities that were enjoyable and really helped me to overcome my issues too. It was great to help me relax from all the stress of Uni and I loved cutting and sticking, I felt like a little kid again!

As a counsellor working in a busy University Student Services department, I regularly pass on information to students about Start2. Start2 offers a great choice of creative activities students can select for themselves, this allows them to feel an element of choice in their own therapeutic process and empowerment as greater self-awareness is developed, independently. This can also be explored later within a therapeutic environment, if they choose.
I have witnessed remarkable results from a number of students who have accessed the website and enjoyed utilising their creative skills. Simple exercises such as The Ten Minute Walk, taking a photo a minute of their local surroundings, helps to reinforce the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction techniques I offer to students, allowing them to incorporate it into daily life in an easy way, it encourages students to get out walking, which is hugely beneficial to their physical and mental wellbeing and really helps new students to notice more about their unfamiliar surroundings, utilising our beautiful campus and local area, which is great for helping Freshers and International students overcome homesickness.
The marketing materials are nicely designed, the service looks inviting and not too clinical, which is appealing to students. I offer information during 1-1 counselling sessions, where it feels appropriate, and also at roadshows and events we hold regularly for the wider student body.
Start2 is simple to use, the instructions are clear and it is easy to navigate. I really value the focus upon positive thinking and wellbeing.

I love being able to dip into the Start2 site as and when I feel a need. It has helped me by giving me creative ideas that I can use as a starting point because I find my creativity is one of the first things that goes when I have low mood and trying to motivate myself is very difficult. By following a 'plan' it helps me to be creative without me pressurising myself plus there are some great ideas on this site - Thankyou xxx

Financial Constraints
I read, with true sadness, in the May newsletter that "Due to financial constraints the Start2 project management and staffed functions will be significantly restricted in the future. Start2 will still be available to use online for the present."
I find Start2 an invaluable tool to help maintain, and improve, my mental health. The possible loss of Start2 causes me very great concern. Without Start2, my mental health will worsen.

Really enjoyed the activities I've done so far. Some require no special materials others are more of a challenge and encourage me to go out into the world to gather things. Having something to motivate me to interact in the world is a positive.
Have found the mood charting very easy to do as there are not so many questions. I have found others quite triggering of feelings of hopelessness and dispair. The feedback on compleationa nd suggested activities is sensitively done too.
Hope this site continues to grow in popularity and number of activities. The approach is very non stigmatising and encouraging. I feel valued after being here.

Start2 for carers
As a carer it's important for me to have 'time out' but it's difficult for me to unwind. Whilst doing some of the activities with Start2 I have managed to not only switch off but also create things that absorb me and help me to relax. I recommend carers use Start2 to enable a sense of calm and well-being and to tap into an often unrecognised artistic streak.

Working with Start2 was a very positive experience - one which we would like to repeat. The workshop was popular and clearly benefited those who took part. The philosophy of using creativity to enhance emotional health is one that we strongly promote as part of our online early intervention service. You and me!
I have headed this "you and me" because I want to share with YOU! I have just come through a period of depression, and am speaking with a marvellous counsellor and have had a change of medication. I am, as a result, much more positive, I am happy with myself, I am coping as I used to do. I want to encourage YOU to remember that, with this excellent site and professional help if needed, you can come through whatever battles you are currently facing! I really do know that it's not easy - I've been there! - but do be encouraged! - life really is worth living: one day (and I hope it is soon) you will look back and say "yes, I was poorly, but now I am well again, and I feel GOOD!" I hope this will help someone out there; if so, then my day will have been happily productive!

This is a gem of a site, a real find! So many craft activities look too difficult. I love the way activities are put in to chunks and you are encouraged to do it at your own pace, and that there are templates etc to print out for of you are not very confident. The word really needs to be spread about this website. Great idea for children, teens and adults, anyone who wants creative ideas weather or not they feel creative, good for people with fairly low energy, mental or physical illnesses. I was already familiar with some of the ideas (eg the recipe poem, which I have used in workshops before). Creative Enablement
Anyone who has lived with symptoms of schizophrenia for a considerable length of time will recognize the perspectives given here: the diagnosable symptoms of sz may be incurably lodged within us and May be a part of our make up, but that does not in itself present a grim or hopeless predicament. This is because our disabilities are also our Attributes. Maybe unwittingly, the psychiatrist's diagnosis undermines these attributes and sets them in a grim light. But really it is a matter of impact, intensity and degree, whether we languish in despair or set about engaging the symptoms as evidence of rare qualities which mark us out as having gifts to be expressed and applied creatively.
What I am saying is: with the right help, a low maintenance dosage of appropriate medication to reduce the intensity of symptom's extremes -one which does not pile on a burden of disability which excessive medicating is apt to do- and some vocational and training guidance, we can be the creative artists that nature intended us to be, using our gifts to master the medium which is best suited to our attributes.
My 'pathway to progress' has been photography. I find that a modicum of seeing things which 'are not there' enables me to apply a creative imagination, to use my mind's eye to envisage the optimal conditions to develop an awareness of the imaging possibilities of any scene I encounter and with my best endeavour, maybe reproduce that on camera.
Well that is photography and visual hallucinations. What then of reconstructing the Dramatist and Playwright, the writer and novelist from auditory hallucinations? Musicians, composers, singers and lyric writers are also only a step away from the same level of creative attribute and giftedness.
The lesson from this is never to underestimate the extent to which we all have gifts to express and with the right opportunities, can re-emerge as part of our restitution after the excesses of ill-health have run their course. Facilitators who work in mental health, please take special note!

Brilliant :)
I have really enjoyed playing around on the Start2 website. It is obvious a lot of time and though has gone into designing it. It is easy to use and as activities are broken down into small sections it was easy to break off and return to it later (something very useful having a little one). I like the focus on finding yourself, connecting with nature and generally working on becoming (or perhaps going back to) being a more grounded individual. The website somehow manages to be friendly and welcoming, allowing you to feel that you can be creative even if you would not necessarily think of yourself as an 'arty' individual. I will definitely be recommending it to friends and colleagues.

It's hard to express just how wonderful this website is. When life gets hard it's sometimes impossible to see a way forward. Negative thoughts race through your head and the simplest tasks feel like climbing a mountain. Yes, counselling can help a lot but there is nothing more beneficial than learning to take control of your own life and well-being. I believe this website does just that; it empowers you. The content is staggering and there truly is something for everyone. I can only speak from my own experience but the exercises I've completed so far have both calmed my mind and put a big smile on my face and for that I thank you so very much.
