Graphite Stick
A Graphite stick is pencil shaped, and is made entirely of graphite. Graphite is that dark stuff you get inside a pencil (not lead – this is a popular myth).
When using the side area of the tip of a graphite stick you can shade an area more efficiently than with a pencil, as the side of the tip of the graphite stick is much larger than that of a pencil. You can easily get a quite nice soft edged effect when you use a graphite stick especially used on its side, as above. This is in contrast, say, to more sharp edged marks from pencils.
