"Doing the word association exercise helped me to think creatively around a topic and come up with solutions."

Introduction

Flower acrostic poems

Daisy

Down at a mouse’s eye-level

A scattering of pure white

In amongst the clouds of dandelions the

Sun plays with its yellow shadows. They are

Yours to pick and weave.

Foxglove

 Falling down in tiers

 Often very tall

eXcept some are small

 Good to look at

 Large bell like flowers

Often the blooms are attractive to bees

Variation of yellow or rusty brown shades

Especially spectacular at the back of a border

What is an acrostic?

An acrostic is a poem that is a form of ‘constrained’ writing. This means it is written in a specific way. The benefit of constrained writing is that it gives you a pattern for your poem, instead of starting with a blank sheet.

Acrostic poems work by writing a word vertically down the side of a page. We will call this word the ‘topic word.’ You then use each letter as the beginning of a line of poetry. Each line should relate back to the topic word in some way.

What might this exercise offer?

  • Are fun to do and anyone can try them
  • Help us to come up with short, inventive pieces of writing
  • Encourages us to think differently
