Creative Writing

The ability to tell stories, conjure up characters and describe scenes vividly is something many of us desire.

Learn creative writing techniques that will help you strengthen your skills and stretch your imagination. Learn about different types of poetry, create poems and prose and enrich your powers of description. Explore how creative writing can develop self-expression.

These exercises are designed to offer something for everyone, whether you are an experienced writer or trying creative writing for the first time.

You can follow this creative writing section as a course, trying exercises in the order shown, or you can pick and choose individual exercises. These creative writing exercises also link in with other courses on the website - Mixed Media - Say it with, Drawing and Painting, Animation.

You can add your writing to your creative writing collection. If you have creative writing written outside of a Start2 exercise, you can also upload this to your creative writing collection, by using the upload box found by clicking here.

What might these exercises offer?

Creative writing:

  • Give us practice at making mental and imaginative connections
  • Stretches our imagination
  • Encourages empathy (to imaginatively “step into someone else’s shoes”) – builds on our skills of connecting with others
  • Increases our powers of observation
  • Develops our powers of communication
  • Enables us to express ourselves

How long will the exercises take?

The Creative Writing course is split into exercises showing different creative writing techniques. Some exercises take a little longer than others. To give you an overview of each exercise works, click through all the steps briefly and gauge how much you might like to do today. You can choose to complete the exercises over a period of time, taking as long as you want. Don’t forget to take breaks from your creative activity on a regular basis, so you stay fresh and energised.
