"I learned how to make a piece of felt from scratch"
Draw a Scene
You will need:
- Sketchbook, or paper and something to lean the paper on while you’re drawing
- Pencils, crayons or felt tip pens
- Viewfinder - This is optional, but helps you to choose which part of the landscape you’re going to draw. (Haven't got one? Go to the beginning of Part 2 for information on how to make and use one, or download our worksheet at the bottom of the pag)
- Plastic carrier bag to sit on if it’s been raining
What is a viewfinder?
A viewfinder helps you to choose which part of the landscape you’re going to draw; it can also be used for isolating a small section from a larger object. Its border blocks out the area surrounding your viewpoint, making it easier to focus on the scene.
What might this exercise offer?
The ‘Draw a scene - Using a viewfinder’ exercise:
- Hones our skills of observation. Observation and drawing are a good way to generate a range of ideas that can be developed into our (textile) designs.
- Helps us to focus in on what we want to draw
- Encourages us to spend time outdoors in the fresh air (in a garden or park). This can benefit our wellbeing
- Prompts us to look for specific subjects to draw which is absorbing and calming
How long will the exercise take?
Each exercise is split into small steps. Whether you complete it all at once or over a
period of time is up to you. Glance through the steps to get an idea of how long the
exercise may take you, then decide how you’ll tackle it. Take a break now and then
to give yourself a pause. You’ll come back with fresh eyes.
