Glossary

 

Alkaline:

The scientific pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a liquid is, with 1 being strongly acidic, 7 being neutral and 14 strongly alkaline. Soap is 9 - 10

 

Carding:

Straightening out the fibres by combing, until they are all lying smoothly in the same direction, ready for spinning or making into felt

 

Embroidery:

is the embellishment of a surface by the application of decorative stitching, it may also incorporate other materials such as beads.

 

Felting:

Felt is a non-woven cloth made from wool fleece, by applying an alkaline substance (soap), water, friction, and heat.

 

Fulling:

The process of shrinking and hardening the wool

 

Wool tops:

Wool which has been washed and carded, and often (but not always) dyed, and is bought by weight in the form of a long rope of fibres
