Textiles - Notice What You Like

Introduction

You will need:

  • A printout of this exercise
  • A pencil

Note - If you can’t print the exercise out, use a notebook or sketchbook, and make a note of the questions in this exercise beforehand

What might this exercise offer?

The ‘Noticing nature’ exercise:

  • Develops our powers of observation
  • Gives us a reason for being outdoors, which can raise mood and help us to sleep better
  • Offers practice in being curious, and observant, which improves our capacity for enjoyment of the world around us

About this exercise

Before you start to make your textile artwork you’ll need to think about the colours and patterns that you’ll use, and what better place to look for ideas than in nature? In this exercise you’ll go out and look for leaves and flowers that interest you, and note down the qualities of your chosen item.  Try to complete the exercise whilst you’re out-doors, but if that’s not possible you could take the leaf or flower home and finish off the exercise there (but don’t pick flowers from the park!).
