Now you’ve had a go at stitches and appliqué and have become adept at spotting interesting shapes, patterns and textures, you can try this exercise the other way around. Instead of thinking of a stitch and then going out to look for things that match it, try going out and looking for eye-catching details you want to record (e.g. rain drops on a leaf)
