Step 2: Notice your surroundings
- Look for patterns on objects whilst out and about, which are suggested by your chosen stitch. Notice the shape of the object bearing the pattern, as this is going to be important to you as well
Step 3: Stitch your sample
- Select background and appliqué fabric. Cut a small square or rectangle out of the background fabric and then a simple shape from the appliqué fabric. See below
Example A:
- Pin or tack the shape to be appliquéd to the background fabric

Using your chosen stitch, stitch through both layers of fabric, securing your appliqué shape to your background shape via your decorative stitches. See below
