Introduction

We all come across problems. Sometimes they’re solved easily and quickly with very little thought, other times, a quiet space to think is needed, and perhaps the trusted viewpoint from someone close. Sometimes a problem seems so big and complex that it can feel overwhelming and unmanageable - we don’t know where to start or what to do.

 

What might this exercise offer?

A step-by-step approach to solving a problem:

  • Can be a useful tool to help look at a problem more objectively
  • Can support us to explore a variety of solutions we may not have considered before
  • Help us to feel more empowered in a situation by making choices that best suit us.

 

This exercise is a step-by-step guide to finding your own solutions to a problem. Take from it what is helpful to you.

 

How long will the exercise take?

This exercise takes about 40 minutes to complete, though it may take a little longer initially. Don’t let that put you off. As with all new things, the more you practice, the more skilled you become, which not only makes it quicker and easier to do, but can be a good confidence booster too. Don’t feel you have to complete it all in one go.

 

It’s recommended that you choose a small, manageable problem to begin with until you become more familiar with the exercise.
There will be examples to guide you along the way.    

 

You will need:

  • A print off of the problem solving templates or A4 lined or plain paper- so you can copy them out from the screen – they are simple to copy
  • A pen/ pencil
